The Jülich Supercomputing Centre (JSC) at Forschungszentrum Jülich has partnered with Goethe-University Frankfurt, ParTec, and Quantum Machines to develop a 10+ superconducting qubit system and integrate it into their high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure.


Jülich Supercomputing Centre partners with Goethe-University Frankfurt, ParTec, and Quantum Machines to achieve quantum-classical infrastructure integration

JSC is the heart of supercomputing in Germany with its operation starting a while ago in 1987. The center continues to maintain the long-lasting tradition of scientific computing at Jülich. Right now, it operates one of Europe's biggest and most powerful computers, the JUWELS. 

It also provides the first quantum computing infrastructure, JUNIQ, and will in no distant time become the home for the first European Exascale quantum computer which will be the first supercomputer in Europe to record a high threshold of at least one trillion computing operations per second.

Goethe-University Frankfurt is one of the foremost universities in Germany. It was set up in 1914 after receiving funding from the Frankfurt citizens to build a university that would encourage a highly supportive and participatory environment. 

University Partnerships

Today, the University in partnership with the Technical University of Darmstadt and Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz operates a research facility, the Rhine-Main Universities Alliance (RMU). This partnership is strategic and is structured to solve the ever-rising challenges of the 21st century.

ParTec develops and manufactures modular High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, Quantum Computers (QC), and accompanying system software. Their novel solution, the dynamic Modular System Architecture (dMSA) was designed for massive high-computing systems to function optimally. ParaStation Modulo Software Suite is the software developed by ParTec to work with the dMSA and has proven to be highly useful in meeting the needs of complex computing power for AI companies.

Quantum Machines is redefining the control and operations architectures of quantum processors via its Quantum Orchestration Platform (QOP). Its full-stack platform can run the most complex algorithms ensuring quantum error correction and multi-qubit calibrations. The QOP enhances the speed of quantum technologies allowing for scale to thousands of qubits in quantum processors.

The initial collaboration began in 2023 and has passed the first phase, work package 1. Work package 1 involves the integration of a QuantWare chip utilizing 25-qubit Contralto technology within a Bluefors cryostat supplied by Forschungszentrum Jülich and the OPX quantum control environment from Quantum Machines. 

This integration was successfully calibrated into JURECA, a Pre-Exascale Modular Supercomputer operated by Jülich Supercomputing Centre and is managed by QBridge, a quantum software that seamlessly embeds supercomputers into quantum computers and vice versa.

QBridge is the result of a collaboration between ParTec and Quantum Machines. It provides a fast, efficient, and secure environment for large HPC centers, cloud providers, and research groups to quickly and safely embed new quantum computers into existing supercomputing infrastructure.

With this success, the collaboration moves into work package 2 where the solutions will be tested and benchmarked while ParTec’s software engineers will develop new functionalities to integrate with the ParaStation Modulo Software Suite to ensure that users can run parallel tasks via multiple modules operating on a single system. 

Also, a task-parallelism software solution utilizing the OmpSs programming model will be developed as they push towards integrating quantum computers into high-performing supercomputers.
